The Dupont Circle Historic
District still contains remnants of the wealth of the post-Civil War robber
barons. Most of the luxurious town homes
in the district were built in the 1880s, as was the structure that now houses
the Inn Washington, which retains its Federal-style brick and stone
façade. The Inn originally had the kitchen on the ground floor, which
now houses the office. Keeping with the standards of wealth and taste of the
time, the house most likely was furnished with 18th century antiques, and
oriental rugs covered the polished wood floors. Over time, as the city changed,
the original elegance of the Dupont area declined, but a renaissance has been
taking place and now Dupont Circle and nearby Georgetown are among the most
desirable residential neighborhoods in Washington.
